In early Jan my dear grandma passed. Didn't post about it then and perhaps will some other time but that's for another day. My aunt (mom's younger sis) who lives in Virginia naturally came over for the funeral. A few weeks after, my grandpa called her just to follow up on things and she drops this bomb - my uncle was involved in a major accident on the freeway in Virginia. He was on a motorcycle and was sandwiched between a pile-up so he was tossed from the bike. My mom sent me this message...

"Those pics are great! What camera do you use?"

You know, it's not *just* the camera, you do have to know how to use it (and your lenses, and know your subject, how to work with the light conditions, post processing...). I'm no pro photographer, but I've entered photos in an art show that I shot with a $99 camera, and I've trashed thousands of photos shot with a $1200 kit. I could buy some really expensive paint brushes but that doesn't make me Picasso. Just sayin' ...

You guys must have sent excellent vibes at 10am, because I think I really did quite well on my written exam. I think I got at least 80%. I hope so, anyway! But where I BOMBED was on the oral exam.

Unfortunately for me, I've come down with a huge cold (half the class has one) as well as I think some food poisoning or a touch of flu, so I am not feeling very up to studying! I would much rather just sleep. My head is so muzzy.

Please send me good vibes at 10am! My oral exam is at 1:30. This is going to be much tougher a test than just "name the 8 positions of the body". It's more about conceptual stuff like "why do we learn this port de bras in this order?"...

When I was a little girl, I used to snoop around in my parent's stuff, knowing that if it was hidden from me, it had to be really interesting or really bad. My dad had an old suitcase full of papers, girly magazines and other boring stuff but under those papers and naked ladies, I found something really neat. It was a small, black photo album filled with black and white candid shots of my mom coming out of the bathroom with her hair in curlers, my uncles playing poker, my dad and his friends looking...

Well, today was day 4 if you can believe it. I'm about half way through this course. You would be AMAZED at the amount of minutia there is to ballet (angles of head, positions of body/legs/arms, corners and sides of the room, differences between the Russian, French, Danish and Italian schools of thought, and what bits from each ABT takes....and then the developmental abilities of children at different ages and what exercises are appropriate...actually, it's harder to create a very basic, simple...

Well, it took me a little longer than planned to get to my first post of the year. Paul has already told you about his Birthday trip, and now I am on MY trip.

You know how there are certain things in life you want to do "someday.."? Well that thing for me is becoming a ballet teacher. My previous post talks about that. I see myself not as training pre-professionals necessarily, but having my own ballet school and discovering the Billy Elliots of the world and sending...

Today the Olympic torch went by my neighborhood on it's way to downtown Vancouver (I live out in a suburb). It was so fun to dress up in Canadian clothes, and watch the torch go by. I'm SO freaking excited about the Olympics coming up!! More pictures to come in the next few weeks of the events that I'm going to, etc.
