Since my last entry, my grandmother spent 3 weeks in a nursing home and...
The nurses suggested we contact someone about possible elder abuse regarding the neighbor lady who has been helping her out
We discovered that this neighbor/unofficial caretaker had a gas credit card in my grandma's name and charged $70 in gas while she was hospitalized
Someone has a cell phone that my grandma has been paying for for the past 2 years
My grandmother refinanced her home TWICE in the past 5 years and now owes over $200k on a home that is barely worth $40K
The neighbor's boyfriend works for the mortgage broker who handled the transactions
Despite refinancing twice, she is completely broke
We found an assisted living facility and moved her in 3 weeks ago
Because she was broke, my uncle had to spend over $3000 to move her in and install her phone and cable TV
My mom and my uncle spent 3 weekends in a row cleaning out her house and getting it ready to sell
My mom and my uncle received daily phone calls demanding that she be allowed to leave the assisted living facility and go live with the neighbor
My mom has missed so much work driving out to personally handle each and every meltdown, her job is in jeopardy
My mom and my uncle both received nasty phone calls from their out of state cousins, demanding to know why they forced my grandmother into assisted living
Three days ago, my grandmother busted out of the assisted living facility and went to live with the neighbor, telling my mom and uncle that her happiness matters more than their concern
The neighbors boyfriend showed up on my uncle's doorstep and told him that we are not to set foot in or remove anything else from my grandmother's house
The neighbor drove my grandmother to my uncle's house, where she demanded he return her checkbook, purse and ATM card
When my mom tried to call her yesterday, the neighbor told her "Pat just wants all of you to leave her alone" and hung up
A few hours later, my uncle got a call from social services, informing him that his out of state cousins have filed an elder abuse complaint against him and that he faces possible jail time
So yeah...in the past 2 months, a 4'7" tall, 75 pound, 91 year old lady who can't even walk unassisted has wreaked havoc on our family like we have never seen before.

Oh my god. That is unbelievably awful. I don't even know what to say. I am so sorry.
What I want to know is why does your neighbour have any rights WHATSOEVER or any input at all? YOU GUYS are the family!!! I don't get it. this is just awful and so saddening. Char I am sorry you are being put thru this and your family.. Something isn't right when did the neighbors have more rights than the family... And these cousins filing a abuse claim this is JUST INSANE..

We are really not sure what, if anything we can do right now. It sounds so wrong to say this, but the bad part is that she's been tested for dementia and Alzheimer's and she's fine. Other than a bit of memory loss, she's amazingly sharp for a 91 year old. If she was suffering from something that impaired her ability to make decisions, we could go to court and ask for a conservator to take control of her and her finances but the way she feels about us right now, she would probably ask that the neighbor be appointed conservator and we would be totally cut out of her life.Posted 09-05-2009 at 12:41 PM by BAW -

Char, this is awful. I hope that Social Services is able to help and dig into the mortgage fraud. It's sickening that people prey on someone just because they're trusting and in need of daily interaction. Neighbors can be such a blessing, but I think we often tend to be too trusting.
