i live in an apartment and i have the opportunity to sublease to someone i know until the end of the year. this would save me a great deal of money for a few months. there is nothing in my lease agreement saying i cannot sublease.
just curious. if you've subleased, have you had an ok experience??

I have been on the other end and had some hassles about util bills, but the girls were idiots. handed me huge unitemized util bills, but I wheedled itemized copies from the companies and they were trying to get me to pay all their connection and security deposit fees. I sorted that out pretty quickly.
I know you didn't ask that, I just got annoyed all over again :)
Good Luck, just make sure everything is in writing.Posted 01-28-2008 at 01:50 AM by snowbunny00774

Yes, I've subleased to other people and been a subleassor.
My advice is, make sure you have your own agreement beyond the lease. Most lease agreements are "joint and several", meaning that any one person can just leave and the remaining people are still responsible for all of the rent. The lease alone cannot compel people to pay rent or find their own subleassor.
When I had people subleasing, we drew up our own agreement that said they were responsible for their share of the rent and a certain share of the utilities. We had problems with people agreeing to sublease and then changing their mind, or agreeing to sublease but then refusing to pay for part of the utilities. Like if they didn't have a computer or TV they would try to get out of paying Comcast. Well, in our house the agreement was everyone pays everything. If you aren't going to use something, too bad or find another house to live in.Posted 01-28-2008 at 01:15 PM by Liesje
