A world gone crazy

Posted 11-02-2004 at 02:19 AM by Dutch Partygirl
With the American elections on today, a war still going on in Irak and various other conflicts around the world, the Netherlands has shown yet another bad side of itself today.

Filmdirector/writer Theo van Gogh was murdered today (about 3,5 hours ago), not too far from my house in Amsterdam. They don't know the reason yet, but it was well-known that he was very critical of the Islam. And apparently a note was found on his body with Arabic text on it.

After the murder of politician Pim Fortuyn a couple of years ago, this is the second high-profile murder in this country, which is normally a very peaceful country. The reason these people got killed was because they spoke their mind. And to be able to say the things you want to say is one of the greatest goods of a democracy. I didn't always agree with what both of them said, but you don't go around killing people for speaking their minds. At least, I thought that you could speak your mind in this country. Maybe I was wrong...
