I got a reply

I was suprised to get a reply from the advice column. This was it:

First and foremost, we urge you to get counseling as soon as practical to help boost your self-esteem. What you see as "ugly," another person--preferably female--might find interesting or unique. Looks are not everything in life; personality and sense of humor are very important to most women. When you're down on yourself, as you obviously are, women can sense it and will keep their distance. However, if you're smiling, friendly and positive, you'll impress a lot more people and feel better about yourself.
If you need counseling referrals, contact the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 112 S. Alfred St., Alexandria, VA 22314 (703-838-9808 or www.aamft.org); and American Psychological Association, 750 First St. NE, Washington, DC 20002 (800-374-2721 or www.apa.org).
Enclose an SASE in each case for materials. Good luck to you.

OK, now call then or write to them. Get the info and then make an appointment with a counselor. I understand that it's not easy to do (trust me. I understand that very very well), but if you broke your leg you would go to the doctor, woudn't you? Of course you would. Well this is your life, Joe, make an appointment with a counselor and then go!

I know several guys who are, quite frankly, pretty homely, but they are wonderful, sweet, very personable guys and that makes them very attractive. Most of us in this world aren't models. We all have flaws and insecurities -- it's just a matter of accentuating what we do have. And we ALL have something which makes us special.
