On the Cusp

I'm a huge baseball fan. My favorite team is the New York Yankees. I've been a big fan since I was 5 years old. This morning I awakened to the fact that the Yanks are up 3 games to 1 in the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies. One more win and the Yanks will be the champs for the first time since 2000. Now, I know that 9 years isn't too long of a time between championships. The Chicago Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and the Boston Red Sox had their famous 86 year drought until that was ended in 2004. But, during those 9 years, a lot of stuff has happened to me. Friends have come and gone. A few girlfriends have come and gone. Hell, I almost got married. Jobs have come and gone. I've moved a few times. I guess the fact that the Yanks are on the cusp of the championship is causing me to reflect on the 9 years that have ensued since the Yanks last won The Big One. On the one hand, I'm very happy that the Yanks are close to winning their 27th World title. But, on the other hand, I'm a little sad that some people whom I was very close with aren't around to share the happiness. They've either moved away, died or simply cut me out of their lives. These were people who I shared the thrill of victory with and also the agony of defeat. Some people I miss and some I'm glad that they're out of my life. Either way, if/when the Yanks win that fourth game, I'm sure those people will be thinking that somewhere good ol' Tony must be loving this. You see, people who have met me over the years discover 2 things quite quickly: I'm a huge U2 fan and I'm also a huge Yankee fan. So when U2 or the Yanks do something big, people that have known me well over the years can't help but think of me. That could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on, of course, how I ended things with them. Lol! So tonight the Yanks will go for it in Philadelphia and I will be watching with a brain and a heart full of memories hoping to add some more to both.
