a - talking about the stuff that happens in your life?
b -beautiful poetry or song lyrics?
c- amusing anecdotes?
d- surveys if you feel like it?

2) do people have free will and can they exercise that free will and choose to skim/skip over the surveys to the more juicy/interesting journal entries they so desire?
Yes, just as people who like surveys can skim/skip over entries that don't interest them.
3) Is it possible there might even people who like to do both?
Absolutely, for people who cannot go on myspace and might want to kill some time doing surveys, they have that option, or if they choose to add an entry that includes option 1a, 1b, 1c from above, technically, they could do that too. I know, it's mind blowing.

My fave journal entries are the mini (or not so mini) soap opera -type ones. Therefore, I think there should be a rule that everyone who keeps a journal here must write at least one "soapy" entry per week.
