engaged!

Ok, it's been forever since I posted anything here. I've been busy working on my MBA and then of course there is work and stuff. From August through November, I was volunteering almost 40 hours a week at the Obama campaign office in my little town. It was an amazing experience and very fulfilling. But it certainly kept me from participating in most of my online activities for lack of a single moment of free time.
And now for the big news. As of last weekend, I'm engaged.
As anyone who has followed my little adventures of the last few years will know, I met my BF while volunteering in Africa. We've been together for almost 5 years now and he's over here going to university. I won't pretend that it's been easy. Relationships are hard work, and when you add the fact that we are from different cultures, languages and religions, it makes it even more tricky. But we've made it work for us. And we've decided that we want to make a permanent commitment. It's funny because in a way, having been together for so long, being "engaged" is almost anti-climactic.
The bad news is that my parents are sure to be really upset. And I hate disappointing anyone, let alone people I love very much. It's very hard to try to explain to people who have a very rigid view of the world why you don't take religious differences to be a deal-breaker. But I guess I have to accept that I can't please them and try not to let it ruin my happiness.
Oh yeah, the ring...well, we are poor and trying to save up our pennies. So we looked around and got some ideas and found that one could obtain a decent ring at a decent price online. (yay internet!) I told him that I wanted something very small and simple. And that's precisely what he got me.

That looks kinda huge. But here is what it looks like on my hand. (kinda blurry tho)
