First 10k done!

So yesterday I completed my first 10k run of the season! It was a gorgeous day, and even though it was cold, the sun helped a lot.
I had my tunes in, and was grooving the entire way.
This was taken by one of the photographers, at the starting line (I'm in all black, behind the two people in the centre):

At about the 5k mark, we were running up this hill, and were close to a water station, when I noticed this sign:

That definitely helped me pick up the pace!
All was going well, and at around 8k there was another water station, and a girl I know was there, so it was fun to see her for like 5 seconds as I ran past.
At about 8.5k I was ready to quit. I was tired and my muscles were starting to get sore. The song that came on then was "Mercy," by Duffy, which totally made me laugh. I was definitely begging for mercy at that point!
But I kept it up, and managed to finish! I sped up for the last KM, and the people on the sidelines cheering everyone on was awesome. I felt like throwing up afterwards, but I was so happy I'd completed it.
We all got a cool little medal, which you can somewhat see in this pic:

My official time was 1:35:18. Not bad, considering I'd only been training for this for about 5 weeks.
I've got about 8 more weeks of training until my next big 10k, so I know I'll be able to do loads better on that run.

SUPER DUPER CONGRATS, THORA!!!!!!!!! I'm so proud of you!!!!!!!
I just did my first 10K a couple weeks ago and had a very similar experience as you - hating it about 3/4 of the way through it and then a little push at the end. I didn't really have any cheerleaders for this one but I did have someone to run with for the first 1/2.
Any thoughts about a triathlon???

Thanks, everyone!
I used to be a hardcore runner when I was younger, and have really loved getting back into it in the past year and a bit.
Zu, I have thought of it. Not seriously, though. I'm a fantastic swimmer, and really love that form of exercise. However, I don't have a bike, and don't have the funds to buy one at this point. However, a triathalon will definitely be in my future. Possibly in a few years!Posted 02-17-2009 at 02:07 PM by Thora
