Some shopping help needed

Posted 07-15-2009 at 07:00 PM by Thora
This is directed to the ladies. I'm looking for a cute little black dress, but I don't know where to start. I'm not much of a girly-girl, so the last time I wore/bought a dress was for my high school graduation 11 years ago. It took me MONTHS to find something appropriate and nice to wear back then, and I'm hoping this time around it won't be as bad. I have a few months until the event that I need the dress for, so there's no huge pressure.

What are some good shops that I could visit in search of this elusive dress? I don't buy clothes online, as you never know how bad or good clothes are going to look until you put them on. Also, I live in Canada, so not all American stores are available here.

HALP! Any advice is much appreciated!

I had a similar dilemma a couple years ago when I had to wear a nice black dress to be a bridesmaid in a wedding. I just went to a dept store and tried on every style that didn't look hideous. Only took about 10 or 12 dresses to find the right one! Good luck and post pics when you find the one.

I have 4 "LBDs" from Charlotte Russe, a store I normally would never shop at (best described as clubbing wear, kinda skimpy trashy stuff, BUT for some reason I like a lot of their dresses and they are cheap!). Not sure if you have this in Canada...

BCBG. I buy most of my dresses there. They have funky styles but if you're looking for simple black dresses, they always have a bunch of those to choose from as well. If you have a BCBG outlet store near you, then you'd likely save anywhere from 30%-50% off...their things can be a bit on the pricey side.

Le Chateau is clearing out all of their grad dresses ~ at a shopping mall near you!

Most will be under $60 Canadian.

Thanks for your suggestions! I'm not skinny, so I have no clue if any of these places will have clothes that fit me, but it's definitely worth checking them out.

I'll be going to Seattle in a few weeks, and hopefully will have a little bit of time to go shopping. If I haven't found anything by then, I'll definitely do some looking when I'm there.

Not skinny? Is that not you in the pic?

I have kind of a box-ish body shape (broad shoulders, not much waist) and I think the ones that look best on me are V-neck or halter (or anything not straight across strapless) and a length just below the knee. Those seem to add length and skinny, at least for me.

Hey girl, sometimes H&M has some cute dresses. I got a nice black strapless from there awhile ago. Mexx also has some cute stuff. You'd be surprised what you can find in department stores, though. Some of them have really great sales, too.

Also, don't forget about thrift stores! You'd be surprised what gems you can find there. Consignment shops will also have a pretty decent formal selection. Show us what you end up getting!

Lies, that's me in the picture, yes. It was taken 2 years ago, and I'm a bit smaller now than I was then, but I wouldn't classify myself as skinny at all. The picture does make me look good, though. It's very difficult to find clothes that fit well and look good on me, because I'm small on top, but bigger on the bottom. Plus, many of the nicer clothing stores around here don't have clothes in my size, which is frustrating.

Anyway, thanks for the tips! I will definitely be posting a picture once I get the dress.
