I find it sad that Americans no longer rally around the Underdog.

Now we, as society, seem to find inspiration in watching the dominant ones destroy each other. Goodbye Rocky. Goodbye 1980 Olympic Hockey Team. Goodbye Rudy. No one seems particularly impressed with you guys anymore. Why is that? When did this happen? Am I wrong - am I just not seeing them?
I wonder if reality TV had something to do with it. Stupid Richard Hatch and his silly little Alliance. There's a reason you went bankrupt, ya stupid twit - karma, mother fucker. NJ got you good, monkey boy. lol, owned.

Free agency happened, my friend. Media coverage happened. It's much harder to go under the radar nowadays. All that you mentioned were either from over a quarter-century ago or fictional.Posted 09-26-2007 at 10:42 PM by phillyfan26

I know those are old examples, I can't think of any new ones.
Free Agency - good one. That probably didn't help it. Everyone is presented in a different light now, they all walk on water so pay them $18million.
But I'm talking more of the spirit of the underdog, you know? I can't recall the last time there was a team or an event or an individual that fought the odds and pulled off something amazing off and everyone paid attention. Maybe cause we have 1000 channels of shit now. I dunno. I find it a sad commentary on American culture. Everyone wants to be aligned with the Top Dog. It seems easy and phony.Posted 09-26-2007 at 10:54 PM by UberBeaver

Well, George Mason University advanced far during March Madness 2 years ago, and a lot of people were rooting for them. If the Cubs make the playoffs, people will root for them, they are a perpetual underdog. When Kurt Warner and the Rams came from nowhere a few years ago and won the Super Bowl, a ton of people pulled for him and the team. I think a good underdog story is still something we like. Movies like Remember the Titans and We are Marshall are underdog stories and very recent. Maybe I'm being naive. And, we have 999 channels of shit and one amazing channel. :) GFY.Posted 09-26-2007 at 11:07 PM by No spoken words

I remember the GMU stuff. College basketball still has it's share of Cinderellas that people get behind every March. And I think every major team is going to have a solid fanbase that will root for them no matter what. I guess what I miss, and haven't seen in a long time, is when EVERYONE gets behind the underdog and really pulls for them - like when it's ubiquitious. I don't really remember the 1980 Hockey Team, but I sorta do, because it was everywhere. People were stoked over it - hockey fans or not.
Maybe the fact that corporations are so huge and in control of what we see has something to do with it to. Corporations love to clone and recycle because it's easy money. They don't take risks, per se, so the script is already written and there's no room in it for the little guy maybe? Sucks. I miss the underdog.Posted 09-27-2007 at 07:23 AM by UberBeaver

Well, anyway, thanks for the kindness you showed me in my craziness and I appreciate the grace. Best wishes, Nozomi (Hope).Posted 09-28-2007 at 06:21 PM by nozomi
