I'd like U2 to be experimental, then, I think, they are at their best. So I choose the Achtung baby record, although JT is a very strong and stable album. Zoo Station still gives me a thrill when I hear it, especially when played live.

They are both terrific albums, no doubt, but just AB because of the hard edge industrialised sound. |

Even though JT has one of my favourite U2 songs of all time, With or without you, but as an album it tends to be some what inconsistent, (I'm a afraid 'Bullet the blue sky' leaves me cold and I skip it every time, same goes for 'Red hill mining town'!) were as a AB is one of U2s most cohesive albums they've produced.

The Joshua Tree every time.
![]() AB has too many radio friendly pop songs which clash badly with the more interesting experimental songs on the album imo. |

Joshua Tree
too many songs on Achtung that hardly do anything for me and Joshua Tree is just so much stronger when you compare the songs that it isnt even funny

Neither is "best", since they are not competitors in a game or race, etc.
But I like JT better.

I think AB's pop sheen made it much more accessible and it had a few more radio hits here in the States than Joshua Tree. UTEOTW, by the way, received a lot of play on rock radio. Trip Through Your Wires, Exit and Mothers of the Disappeared could never be airplay magnets and pretty much everything on JT is out of step with the mainstream music of the time (as is a lot of AB). Running To Stand Still/Red Hill Mining Town would also be weird singles. Frankly, this band has never written a ballad as radio ready as "One" or a pop track as infectious and instantly memorable as "Mysterious Ways".

but that was not the point One, Mysterious Ways and Even better ... more suited to radio around that time than Joshua Tree? easy
