A backing track doesn't bother me. When, I saw the band, Mercyme in concert they used a back track for the symphonic sounds on a few of their songs and it sounded fantastic. It didn't take away from the live performance at all.

bono does not lip sync on tour - they do help him with their instruments, thats why the guitar and bass are often turned down 1/2 step live, so he does not have to stretch as much vocally. but look at how much effort they put into doing a live show - you can always hear how clearly he sings - but as hes getting on you can tell his voice is slowly giving way, but i think that its an amazing sound all the same, because u2 are at that phase in their career, what over 30 years now? and his voice reflects that.

From what I remember, the intro MOOOOOOO-FOOOOOOs during the early North American shows of Popmart were pre-recorded.

Not that it really matters, but was the "everyone" bit at the opening of the Vertigo shows pre-recorded or was Bono doing that every night?

I don't think that was even Bono saying that right?

Here's a thread from @U2 in which Matt McGee did some research into the 'Everyone' voice. According to this, it's not Bono or Gavin

With all the digital effects possible nowadays, it's so easy to just hop from the studio to the stage. It's a little boring. It takes away the innate spontaneity of the live show. Oh well. It was great to hear the old stuff (pre 87) on the last tour. It was just the instruments, no trickery. Well, there was probably actually a lot of trickery set up to mimic simplicity. But I liked it. An Cat Dubh. Into the Heart. Great stuff. Thanks for all the responses to my post everyone.
the first time they ever did it was indeed on live versions of Bad, and interestingly enough, the result was exactly that the song sounded totally different from the album version.

ugh this thread still alive??

the Mooofoo's on pop were sung by Bono live, every single night!

Everyone was prerecorded

I have the video boot of bono having a very milli vanilli-type moment at the 6/1/97 giants stadium show. my non-u2 fan friends gave me tremendous grief about it. He is so wrapped up in shadow boxing that he gets distracted from lip-synching mooo-fooooo...not that there is anything wrong with it!

just the opening part, not the lyrics.

Bono has a teleprompter on stage in the Vertigo shows with the lyrics scrolling for him to read as he sings.... I could see the scrolling lyrcis from my seat behind the stage way up in the top deck during a Vertigo show in the Staples Center in L.A.

During that show, he forgot some of the lyrcis to Whos Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses as he was walking out on the circular "B" stage into the audience. He quit singing while the band kept playing until the chorus came around again. He certainly could not have been lipsynching during that son as he just stopped singing half way through for about 20 seconds and then started again during the chorus.
