Hypothetical: How would you feel about GOYB if it wasn't the lead off single?

i challenge each of you to completely clear your memories of GOYB leading off this great album. imagine that Magnificent was the lead off single, and that you're listening to the album for the first time, and suddenly at track #6, GOYB kicks off!

what are your thoughts?

------------------------------------------------

personally, i think it's a very good song. while not on the same level as Magnificent, MOS, FBB, and UC, this song still rocks and is a nice break in the middle of this album. the riff is great, and i love the eastern influence in the chorus. the "Let Me In The Sound" part is one of the best moments on this album! years down the road, i will group this song with some of U2's best hard rock tracks (God Part II, The Fly, LNOE).

It's a good song, not a great song imo but it's fun and it should be a blast live. I don't think whether it was chosen as a single or not really changes my opinion though. It’s definitely, like you say, one of the weaker tracks on the album but I still like it well enough.

Awesome video though, one of their best since Pop or even Zooropa, I would say...

I'd still hate it.

But....at least I wouldn't think u2 lost their minds by making it the first single.

I'd still think it's U2's 6th best song ever.

The same. Good song, not great. Love the "let me in the sound" part.

i guess, i would follow up then with, "did the fact that GOYB was the lead off single affect the way you feel about the song?"

Perhaps. The fact that it was the first new U2 song in a couple years, I may have subconsciously forced myself to like it more than I otherwise would have. I do like the song, though. Hypothetically, if it wasn't the lead single, I would probably still think to myself "I hope they release this as a single at some point."

It is a good song, not a great song, but I agree that people would be kinder to it if it hadn't had the weight of supporting U2 all by itself for such a long period.

I understand what he's saying though - when we got Boots, I'm sure I wasn't the only one to listen to it on repeat over and over and over again so that now when it comes on in the course of the album it's kinda jarring, it stands out and is hard to judge as part of the whole... at least for me.

U2 have had a lot of dodgy lead off singles, it doesn't phase me anymore.

I got worried with Numb, and hid my face with Disco, but now I just wait and judge when the album comes out...

If it wasn't then to me it would be like the "Even Better Than The Real Thing" of the album. The kind of odd short song that isn't shitty, but not super great either.

i probably forced myself to like it more since it was the lead off single. had i never heard it when the album came out, and was listening to the album straight through i think it would have been much worse. it just doesn't fit with the album. i now skip it and suc everytime.

i am more annoyed that its going to take a slot up every night live.

all that said, i don't hate it- its just very weak for a u2 song.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

see that's interesting. if anything, i've rediscovered GOYB, and it's becoming one of my favorites.

I think it would have caught people off guard on the album...there would still be those that think it is a tight tune (like me) and others that would not know, and would not get it and those that would hate it.

even though it was the lead off single I can't say I was bombarded with it so I guess it makes little difference
I do enjoy this one more & more though
