NLOTH Songs: Studio vs Live

not sure if this has been done before but:

NLOTH - Much better live. Hearing Bono's guitar is always a plus.

Magnificent - meh, about the same. Tie

MOS- Live the song is musically brilliant, however Bono (of course) completely ruins the song by too many oh oh ohs, talking over the solo, and recently "rapping" over the last minute or so, which is one of the best musical moments in U2 history. Live the instrumental parts (the intro, the solo, the outro with only oh oh ohs) should be kept as instrumentals, not Bono trying to be Kanye West. Studio.

UC- the solo is better live, when Edge nails it, but studio version overall.

IGCIIDGCT- I dont really care for either version. Studio wins though.

Boots -MUCH better live. love the intro.

SUC - oh wait....

Breathe - Studio. when it comes to rock songs, i prefer layered guitars than stripped down live versions, even if there is more energy live.

4 studio
2 live
1 tie

NLOTH: live. 2nd best live song off the album.

Magnificent: sorry, album version. One of those great studio takes by U2, like Pride, One, Desire and Kite.

MOS: I like both, though the edge goes slightly to the studio, for the awesome vocal.

UC: album. The chanting is better.

Crazy tonight: That's not even worth dignifying with an answer.

Boots: live. The intro alone wins this one.

Breathe: live.

So, only Magnificent and the Caller aren't better live for me.

NLOTH: live

Magnificent: I like different aspects of both versions... so either one.

MOS: LIVE. I adore the Bono rap.

UC: Live

Crazy Tonight: the versions are so different; I'll take either.

Boots: Live (studio is not a valid answer)

Breathe: Live

NLOTH: Studio - it's close. i think it's really good live, but if you were to ask my to list my top 10 studio songs, NLOTH would be on the list. can't beat that.

Magnificent: Live - another close one. the tiebreaker is because of one very moment where Bono says "Sheffield" after the first rumble of the guitar.

MOS - Studio - while i like Bono's rap, i think the studio version features strong overall vocals, especially in the verses.

Unknown Caller - Live - the crowd singing along and the extension after the guitar solo.

Crazy Tonight - Live - probably the best improvement of a studio track in a long time. i consider the album version pretty bland, and i hardly ever listen to it. the remix version made the song interesting and fun.

Boots - Live - but not as much as you'd think. i actually prefer the album's guitar tone during the chorus over the live version.

Breathe - Live - almost a tie here. my favorite version of this song is when they played it on a talk show the day before the album was released. i can't remember what talk show it was, but i thought it was pretty tight there.

NLOTH: Live, it works really well, and Bono playing guitar is nice to have.

Magnificent: Doesn't really take off live, so I'll have to pick Studio.

MOS: Live. The studio version I haven't listened to since I got the album, but I actually liked the song live!

UC: Live, gave me a whole new appreciation to the studio song as well, but Edge's solo live?

Crazy Tonight: Live, ofcourse! I love the studio version but nothing beats hearing that beat and seeing those faces on the big ass screen( I happen to be wearing the CT t-shirt right now, coincidence?).

Boots: Live (studio is not a valid answer) *Stole that from Digi, as it's the only correct answer. SEXY BOOTS! I think not.

Breathe: Hm, tough.. Closely tied, but I do love the extended intro so live gets the bit.

K that's 6 live, 1 studio. Yeah, I prefer live tracks overall.

Maybe you're thinking of the Jonathan Ross show? That was the first time I really noticed the song. MUCH better live, really comes alive!

GOYB: Live. They finished writing it.
Magnificent: Album.
NLOTH:Hmm... I guess live?
UC: MUCH better live!
MOS: Tremendous in either form. Live, I think.
IGCIIDGCT regular: live
IGCIIDGCT remix: live

The Breathe performance you're talking about, IIRC, is from night one of Letterman.

NLOTH - Live
Magnificent - Studio... by a tiny bit
MOS - Studio. Although the live version is good, I still think its a bit too slow.
UC - I've loved this song from day one (beach clips) so it's a tie but that solo...
I'll Go Crazy - Studio. Too bad that we haven't heard the normal song played live as much.
Boots - Live, they gave it more life with that intro. Should have been the show opener.

NLOTH - I like the studio version a lot but... the live versions rocks!
Magnificent - Like U2girl said, «Sorry, album version. One of those great studio takes by U2, like Pride, One (...)»
MOS - Both. It's has a nice studio work, but it works well live as well. I would dismiss the initial "Oh oh oooh's", but I love the final rap!
UC - Sorry, this is one of U2's best studio pieces of the more recent career. The live versions are ok but don't even match half of the perfection and intensity of the studio track, like "One", for instance.
Crazy Tonight - I'd rather pretend that the shitty live version doesn't exist. And since the "normal" live versions (Barcelona and pocket shows) are just ok, I choose the album version.
GOYB - Both. Actually, I'm one of the few that really enjoys the studio track and the whole production work behind it. Live: I love the intro and the energy (WOOF!), but I like the guitar work more on studio.
Breathe - Both. The live version is good (not great) and it would be one of my favourites if it wasn't the opener.

I don't think that live versions are generally great because, whether the album is great as a whole or not, this time, NLOTH brought very solid or interesting studio pieces.

I think the album versions were good already and the live versions didn't surpass them with two exceptions.

NLOTH: Album

Magnificent: Album

MOS: Album

Unknown Caller: Album

Crazy Tonight: Live (The remix is the best song transformation since live Mofo)

Boots: Album

Breathe: Live (The long drum solo at the start is something that the band should have had on the album version)

Album 5-2 Live

Live.

All of them.

After hearing them live, I pretend the studio versions don't exist.

I liked them all better live. Went to four shows, and live is where they live indeed. moment of surrender I can see an argument for Studio - ditto Unknown caller- but I liked how they ended Unknown Caller and the solo really came to life live. Moment, I just think of it as a perfect closer to the show and thus give it the nod. I like the Bono rap towards the end too. And hearing the crowd with the Oh-oh-oh's was chilling.
