Any body who studies history will know that during his time Abraham Lincoln was the worst president we ever had and very much hated as well. Now I'm not putting W in the same league as Lincoln but I feel that history will be kinder to him than the current generation.

that's a simplification of how Lincoln was viewed in his time, and when the country was literally being torn apart by civil war, i hardly think the Lincoln comparisons are accurate.

still, i think Bush's standing will improve incrementally, if for no other reason than he has no place else to go but up, and certain historians will try to make a name for themselves by writing a headline-grabbing book rehabilitating whatever presidency -- we saw this with Truman, Nixon, etc.

the fact remains that Bush's policies were disastrous, both at home and abroad, and for the GOP as well as they are now a party for old Southern white straight christian men, and he presided over the sinking of an American city. he chose to govern from the base and sought to win over precisely 51% of the electorate and he inflamed and exploited whatever cultural tensions exist in the US for political expediency.

I'm not so sure what was wrong with that statement, Bruce. Are you suggesting that the Katrina fiasco was unavoidable? Even U2 makes note of this in "The Saints Are Coming" video, where the National Guard should have been aiding those in a sinking New Orleans, instead of being stuck in the fucking desert.
