What on earth are police doing with Tasers??

I have no problem with police & security personnel having Tasers. They kind of make sense to me---if someone is far too out of control, stun them instead of shooting them. But in my area, at least two people have died from police using Tasers in the last month or so. What on earth are people doing with them?? Is there no restraint being used?

What scares me more is that the general public can buy them! I've even heard them advertised on the radio! What are the cops doing? Think about what all the weirdos of the world could do- sexual assault, torture, child abuse, animal abuse, the possibilities are endless. Somebody stop this.

I agree they shouldn't be available to the general public, but IMO the cops shocking someone is a much better thing than repeatedly cracking someone in the head with a baton.

There's a lot of debate about tasers in Canada right now, cause people are dying pretty often from them. Of course, most of those people were on drugs or had health problems to begin with.

If people would just be cooperative and behave the way they should, they wouldn't be tased. Granted, I'm sure there have been cases where using a taser wasn't warranted, I won't argue that. But I think that for the most part they are used responsibly...and people are often warned first as well.

I once had a friend send police over to my house because he thought I was hurt (I wasn't). The police pounding on the door got my large dogs riled up, and the police warned me that if I didn't contain my dogs, they would be tased. At first I was mad, my dogs are nice and were just excited, they wouldn't hurt anyone... but the police don't know that, and they have to protect themselves. Instead of arguing, I locked my dogs in the bathroom until the police were gone. Problem solved, no tasers came out.

Whenever I watch Cops, and someone is getting threatened with the taser, I yell that out. It's like an automatic reflex now, I can't help it.

OMFG! Me too!!! My wife keeps yelling at me for being insensitive because every time there's a story on the news about someone being tasered I say that.

There was a story recently in England, I think it was the day before the London bombings, a diabetic on a bus passed out do to lack of sugar (or whatever it is they need). As he was slumped over his rucksack, police thought it'd be a jolly good idea to electrocute him several times, whilst holding a real gun to his head. This was after warning him 3 times, to which he did not respond.

Funny thing is, if he DID have a bomb, the electric shock probably would have detonated the bomb.

Within 30 seconds of arriving, 4 supposedly trained RCMP police officers determine that tasering an agitated non-English speaking individual was the correct action. Utterly ridiculous.

The RCMP is an embarrassment to Canada and not just for this incident.

Ban the taser!

Train those officers adequately or dismiss them would make more sense than saying "ban the taser" because those officers are using it inappropriately.

I say ban the taser cause it's turning cops into lazy SOBs who refuse to do the job they are trained to do. There is a false belief that the taser does no irreparable harm to the victim and we are seeing more and more irresponsiblility by the police (that we know of). Even for people who have been tasered without suffering death, I imagine many of those cases also did not warrant a taser. It's easier to pull out the taser and zap people instead of having to negotiate or use their takedown training to stop an individual.

If they cannot ensure that the all police can be responsible enough to use the device properly, take it out of their hands. I don't trust them not to taser me or someone I know because they feel like it. This won't happen because there are fuckups in every occupation who refuse to follow policy. If EVERY incident involving a taser was an incident which definitely required a gun, I would have no issue with their use. But this is no longer the case. They are quick fix devices for the police.

And those officers involved in the incident here in Canada will probably receive no reprimand as it gets brushed under the rug.

You know, for every youtube video of cop car nosecam-taped taser misuse, there's another video of a driver being pulled over and acting like an idiot.

One in particular, a guy is pulled over by a cop, there is some misunderstanding, and the cop asks him to get out of his car. The guy, innocently, is trying to explain to the cop why he was speeding, and approaches the cop car pointing back down the road to indicate where a road sign was badly marked.

The guy continues gesturing and approaching the cop when verbally warned to stop several times, and the cop tases him. Now, it's just common sense that in a roadside stop situation, you do not dick around. The officer on duty is already in a very, very dangerous situation by being by the side of the highway, and is already on edge.

People just need to learn how to deal correctly with officers of the law, and on the other side, cops need better training due to so many of these inncidents occuring.

That said, when a weapon such as a taser is perceived by the user as a "control device" instead of an instrument used to inflict injury (a gun), I think there is a certain tendancy to abuse or rely too heavily on said weapon.
