The Torch Bearer

Came up with this a few weeks back when I was sitting, bored out of my brain, studying for my exams and I'm not sure if it's any good or whatever but I decided to, erm, post it here anyway. So here goes...

Ahem.

THE TORCH BEARER

Raindrops fizzle on a melted road
A passing lorry flattens an unlucky toad
The life you want ain't always what you get
But frettin' an' worryin' will just make you upset

I've worked this stretch since I was a boy
'Twas not long after the Fall of Troy
When I came with my parents, they were good like that
Took me everywhere with 'em, me and the cat

Couldn't afford a dog they'd always say
"Oh Mom", I'd huff and then sulk all day
"When you're a man you'll know what it is to endure"
Ask me and I'd say, "What a load of manure"

But pops had it right, to a certain extent
Fatherhood focuses, softens and channels your intent
I'm now teaching life's lessons to a boy of my own
Make sure he gets back on the horse when he's thrown

Bring 'em up right and see 'em come good
What's left unsaid is still there and understood
The next generation, you know, they stand on our shoulders
So plant your feet, it's your job, it's your duty to be holders

Of the torch eternal that never flickers or wanes
I keep it with me always as I cross the deserted lanes
Past the fallen tree I once hid out in as a lad
For a few hours that tree was all I had

But when the evening's gloom descended
And the moon, it began to shine
I started for home, up the laborious incline
Back to my parents and their unquestioning love
Relied on them more than the big man up above

'Cos this world it's tough, I ain't gonna pretend
But son, I'll always have, an ear you can lend.

Let me know what you think anyway. I'd say it got a bit sappy near the end myself. Bit obvious sounding maybe. Alot of poetry seems to be pretty much incomprehensible to the average person (by which I mean me) so I guess I should have maybe thrown in a few more big words.
