Desert Island V Album Game: FINAL
Please vote for the playlist you LIKE THE MOST.
After 47 matches, we've made it to the final. phillyfan26 has taken third place in the tournament by defeating phanan, 8-3, in the battle for the bronze. Congratulations to phillyfan26 for a job well done. Unlike our other matches, the final will be 48 hours long. Our two finalists are LemonMelon and hardyharhar. Below are their playlists. If you don't know the songs, or wish to hear how each playlist flows, feel free to check out the Desert Island website. ![]() Forum name: LemonMelon The purpose of splitting these two sets up is to emphasize just how drastically different they are from one another, and that they provide two entirely different experiences. It is preferable to listen to them in a row (if you do, I suggest you listen to Super Massive Black Cherub Metal, and then ease your way in to #9 Dream) but listening to them separately doesn't do much to hurt the overall experience. Ultimately, I hope everyone finds something to love here, and that those who find one set less enjoyable than the other could at least discover some new music out of it. ![]() Supermassive Black Cherub Metal Not much to say about this playlist. It's just a set of good ol' fashioned rock n' roll that's consistently louder than anything I've entered previously; even the breaks in the loudness tend to be lo-fi and themselves filled with noise. But this is good, as there aren't any ballads awkwardly thrown in for the sake of variety. Sit back and crank this one up as loud as you can. Track listing: 1. Smashing Pumpkins - "Cherub Rock" - Siamese Dream (4:57) 2. Pixies - "Broken Face" - Surfer Rosa (1:30) 3. Ween - "Dr. Rock" - The Pod (3:10) 4. Suede - "The Drowners" - Suede (4:09) 5. Sonic Youth - "Kool Thing" - Goo (4:05) 6. Beastie Boys - "Sabotage" - Ill Communication (2:58) 7. Elastica - "Connection" - Elastica (2:19) 8. Muse - "Supermassive Black Hole" - Black Holes And Revelations (3:29) 9. Porcupine Tree - "Blackest Eyes" - In Absentia (4:23) 10. Queens Of The Stone Age - "Suture Up Your Future" - Era Vulgaris (4:37) 11. Blur - "You're So Great" - Blur (3:34) 12. Tom Waits - "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" - Bone Machine (2:30) 13. Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945" - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (3:12) 14. Cake - "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" - Comfort Eagle (3:23) 15. Pearl Jam - "Last Exit" - Vitalogy (2:53) 16. T. Rex - "Mambo Sun" - Electric Warrior (3:39) 17. Queen - "Sweet Lady" - A Night At The Opera (4:02) 18. Led Zeppelin - "Ramble On" - II (4:23) 19. The Small Faces - "Afterglow (Of Your Love)" - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (3:30) 20. The La's - "Feelin'" - The La's (1:45) 21. Television - "Marquee Moon" - Marquee Moon (10:38) Total runtime: 79:16 ![]() #9 Dream This set is a concept album but, in contrast to Cherub Metal, which had a musical concept (rocking out as hard as possible), #9 Dream contains many running lyrical threads, along with a generally airy musical feel. Originally, this playlist was meant to be a soundtrack for a movie I wanted to make about a man who becomes extremely ill and decides to sleep his way through it rather than take himself to a hospital. The movie was going to be extremely surreal and would explore what a waking (2 hour long) dream would look like. Because of this, the playlist for it is equally surreal and feverish. It is very dark, filled with lyrics concerning illness, death, and insanity, but ultimately asks many thought-provoking questions about love and life. And, in spite of the darkness, there are many moments of childlike wonderment to be heard here. The twist ending is that, in accordance with a line in the final song here, Moby's "Porcelain" ("In my dreams I'm dying all the time"), the protagonist may or may not have survived the night. Regardless of whether or not they did, we can assume that they learned much about themselves during this hour or two. While listening, try to focus on the musical flow of the playlist in addition to the plotline, which actually strengthens its. As in any dream, there are moments where things go off the rails ("300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues", "Defecting Grey") and this playlist takes advantage of the vignette quality that so many dreams take on. So, in conclusion, what can you expect from this playlist? Airy soundscapes, quiet darkness, lovely noise, and much contemplation. Dig it. Track listing: 1. Modest Mouse - "3rd Planet" - The Moon And Antarctica (3:58) 2. The Verve - "Already There" - A Storm In Heaven (5:38) 3. The Cure - "Lullaby" - Disintegration (4:08) 4. The White Stripes - "300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues" - Icky Thump (5:29) 5. My Bloody Valentine - "When You Sleep" - Loveless (4:11) 6. Cocteau Twins - "Heaven Or Las Vegas" - Heaven Or Las Vegas (4:56) 7. John Lennon - "#9 Dream" - Walls And Bridges (4:45) 8. The Flaming Lips - "In The Morning Of The Magicians" - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (6:17) 9. The Pretty Things - "Defecting Grey" - S.F. Sorrow (Bonus Tracks) (4:28) 10. King Crimson - "I Talk To The Wind" - In The Court Of The Crimson King (6:03) 11. Blind Melon - "No Rain" - Blind Melon (3:35) 12. The Moody Blues - "Floating" - To Our Children's Children's Children (3:00) 13. Radiohead - "In Limbo" - Kid A (3:30) 14. Beck - "Runners Dial Zero" - Mutations (Import) (4:02) 15. Genesis - "The Carpet Crawlers" - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (5:02) 16. Massive Attack - "Exchange" - Mezzanine (4:11) 17. Moby - "Porcelain" - Play (3:59) Total runtime: 77:21 Forum name: hardyharhar ![]() Hardy Har Har's Desert Island 5 Playlist With about a day to get this thing together, the only theme I could come up with was to be loosely semi-autobiographical through songs I've known and loved. A few that take me to specific places. Brought back a couple from my retro set. Lifted The Pretender's from Vintage Punk's. I think this list would be a great set to take a long drive to. It may have changed a bit if I had more time but I like it just the same. Hope you enjoy some of it. Part One - Awakening (Whatever you say, Kath) Still under the influence of my big sister, I'm dependent on her collection and I spend many hours daydreaming to her more folk leaning LPs. However, her parties during the 60's at our house and friends who attended open my eyes to a world I wanted to be a part of, but would have to wait 'til 1971 & high school for. I'm able to observe the summer of love from a distance. 1. The Everly Brothers - "All I Have To Do Is Dream" - The Everly Brothers' Best (2:22) 2. Music Explosion - "Little Bit O' Soul" - Little Bit O' Soul (2:21) 3. The Beach Boys - "Don't Worry Baby" - The Absolute Best Vol. 1 (2:48) 4. The Beatles - "You Can't Do That" - A Hard Day's Night (2:38) 5. The Doors - "Hello, I Love You" - Greatest Hits (2:15) 6. Cream - "Strange Brew" - Disraeli Gears (2:49) 7. The Who - "Substitute" - Live At Leeds (2:07) 8. Pink Floyd - "See Emily Play" - Relics (2:53) 9. Elton John - "I Need You To Turn To" - Elton John (2:33) Part Two - Reckoning (hey man, schoolday's insane, hey man, my work's down the drain) The day I turned 16, I got my driver's license and that night I began a food delivery job with older guys. This was the catalyst to a downward spiral that lasted a decade or so. King Missile's Cheesecake Truck fit nicely. Mott the Hoople's All the Way From Memphis was the song playing as I walked into my first high school party. Editions of You was a Roxy live staple and is from their 2nd & final album with Eno. The rest, groups and songs I liked during the70's & early 80's. Already a big Zep fan, Led Zeppelin was not my first concert. However, it was the concert that showed me exactly what I had been searching for. Like U2's Elevation tour, Zep strolled out onto the stage to no hoopla, Bonham burst into the opening beats of Rock 'n Roll, a song I loved, and a fairly naive 17 year old was instantly blown away. This version's first minute or so takes me right back to that moment I remember so well. The excitement of the crowd's roar, Plant's initial wails, the instantaneous maelstrom of teenage anarchy all around my girlfriend and I. Everything and anything going on. No parents around with their kids in those days. Ha! One constant through these years was the music. Great shows, bands & songs all the way through those crazy nights. I've ended it with the obvious and wonderful Rock 'n Roll Suicide. By my late 20's, I knew this lifestyle had to end. 10. King Missile "Cheesecake Truck" -Mystical Shit / Fluting on the Hump (1:11) 11. Mott The Hoople "All The Way From Memphis" -Mott (5:00) 12. Roxy Music "Editions of You" -For Your Pleasure (3:49) 13. Jim Hendrix "Fire" -Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix (2:44) 14. Led Zeppelin "Rock 'n' Roll" -How The West Was Won [Disc 3] (3:56) 15. The Rolling Stones "Rip This Joint" -Exile On Main Street (2:23) 16. The Cramps "Can Your Pussy Do the Dog?" -A Date With Elvis (3:25) 17. Stray Cats "Stray Cat Strut" -Stray Cats (3:18) 18. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "American Girl" -Greatest Hits (3:29) 19. The Kinks "Sleepwalker" -Sleepwalker (4:04) 20. Pretenders "Precious" -Pretenders (3:37) 21. Queen "Keep Yourself Alive" -Classic Queen (3:46) 22. Squeeze "Is That Love" -Singles 45's And Under (2:33) 23. The English Beat "Best Friend" -I Just Can't Stop It (3:02) 24. Elvis Costello "Wednesday Week" -Taking Liberties (2:05) 25. The Cure "Fire In Cairo" -Boys Don't Cry (3:21) 26. The Clash "Somebody Got Murdered" -Sandinista [Disc 1] (3:33) 27. Midnight Oil "My Country" - Earth And Sun And Moon (4:51) 28. David Bowie "Rock & Roll Suicide" -Ziggy Stardust (3:02) Part Three - Redemption (Life Gets Better, Yeah!) I don't know what Lila saw in me, but she liked me and basically saved me in everyway that a person can be saved (lifted from Titanic, lol). So I've included here songs & groups we have enjoyed together. And our greatest achievement - Maddy, an angel sent to us from heaven - contributed a couple of songs I like quite a bit, turning me on to Speed of Sound, Storm in a Teacup, and Shut Up and Drive. I'm a lucky guy. 29. Vangelis "Chariots Of Fire" -Themes (3:31) 30. Mike Oldfield "Arrival" -QE2 (2:49) 31. Crowded House "Distant Sun" -Together Alone (3:50) 32. U2 "One Tree Hill" -Joshua Tree (5:23) 33. Oasis "Don't Look Back In Anger" -(What's The Story) Morning Glory? (4:48) 34. Coldplay "Speed Of Sound" -X & Y (4:49) 35. Pearl Jam "I Am Mine" -Rearviewmirror: Greatest HIts 1991-2003 Disc 2 (3:36) 36. Audioslave "Doesn't Remind Me" -Out Of Exile (4:16) 37. The Chemical Brothers "Orange Wedge" -Surrender (3:07) 38. EMF "Unbelieveable" -Schubert Dip (3:28) 39. Inspiral Carpets "Keep The Circle Around" -The John Peel Sessions-V/A (3:32) 40. Rihanna "Shut Up & Drive" -Good Girl Gone Bad (3:32) Time: 2:39:56 Competition master list. Have fun!

Congrats to both of you for making it this far. You both have excellent playlists that deserve to be here at the end.
Having said that, we obviously have to choose a winner between the two of you, and while I will be more than happy with either of you being the champion, I personally will be voting for LM here, as I've said pretty much from the beginning that his list was one of my favorites. Good luck to you both.

Also, I've noticed that Ali is back, so I would assume she'll vote this time. I do have her manual vote if needed. Her vote would be for LM.
Again, this final goes for 48 hours.

Hardy's list is so, so very good. The amount of awesome songs is staggering. Of course, I like every song I picked and feel that I did an excellent job making both discs not only work individually, but flow together as a cohesive whole, so my vote is for myself.
Regardless, Hardy really did an awesome job and deserves a spot here, definitely. I've voted for him in every one of his matches except for this one.

What does "if needed" mean, exactly?
If she doesn't vote, it will be added automatically, or, if a tiebreaker is needed, it will be used? Just want to clarify.

If she forgets to vote, I will still add it manually as it was given to me prior to this match.

Thanks.
BTW, are the tiebreakers for final matches the same as for the rest of the game, or would there be a sudden death type thing? We had a tie in DI2, but Axver was running that, and the tiebreaker system was different, IIRC.

The tiebreaker scenario would be the same. You hold the tiebreaker here.

Hey, I'll be sending out PMs for the Critics' Choice ballot to every competitor, and if anyone else would like a ballot, PM me and I'll send on right back to ya.

These two playlists are great and they deserve to be the last two standing. For reelz. But Hardy gets my vote here.
Anyway, this was a hell of a lot of fun and congrats to you both. I already look forward to the next installment of this crazy game. Hopefully I'll still be alive when it rolls around. |
