I love this story.

Quote:
Anyway, a little background story. You know in Seinfeld when they say that Kramer's life is a fantasy camp? Well, this friend/roommate of mine is a real life one of those. Somehow he just falls ass-backwards into great situations, beautiful, often guilt-free women, and perfectly-timed sources of income. We all envy his incredible fortune (or strategy, we'll never really know for sure)

Well, dude had a ticket for the Feist show in Chicago tonight, and upon hearing about the Ryan show that became top priority and he almost sold the ticket but of course we all know how fast those tickets went, whatever, etc. and we decided to move on with our lives, he would see Feist, and we'd count the seconds until fall tour.

But while driving up to Chicago from Urbana today the Kramerica kicked in--he got a phone call from a friend of ours who is an intern at WXRT who is working at the show(bitch!) and she told him that one of the other interns was sick or bailed or something and she now had a +1 to get him in. He texted me right away about this. Bastard. He immediately sold the Feist ticket to some other XRT intern, thus making back a decent chunk of his gas money. Of course.

Then I got a text message at 7:05: "Im alone at a bar with ra and all the cards. I just pissed w neil." I called him out on spelling NEAL's name wrong, which he chalked up to being incredibly shaky. I forgave him.

Then I texted him saying if he did in fact talk to Ryan to thank him for Dear John for me, but he called me right back and said too late, they just left-and he already talked to him...He and all these other dudes were sitting at a table nervous as shit trying to find the right way to go up to Ryan, but finally my buddy got the nerve to go up to him and ask sheepishly if he was going tohear them play any The Shit songs tonight, to which Ryan replied something like "man I wish could hear some, but The Shit ain't here tonight, it's the Cardinals!" Seems like a delightful Ryan encounter, as Ryan encounters go.

So if in fact Ryan Adams & The Cardinals play "Drunk And In Jail For Arson" tonight, you heard about it here first. And I'd consider it pretty likely, because this dude is just that lucky.

Sorry for telling such a long story without actually being involved, and I'm sure my friend will be on here tonight to tell it himself, but I just had to tell someone. I'm gonna punch him in the nuts in the morning.

I actually heard all of "Halloween Head" for the first time last night...LIVE. Our seats were AMAZING, I had a clear view of him, and I'd say we were less than 50 feet away.

6/20/07 - Gem Theatre - Detroit, MI

Please Do Not Let Me Go
Let It Ride
Elizabeth, You Were Born To Play That Part
The Sun Also Sets
Oh My God, Whatever, Etc.
Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard
Halloween Head
Blue Hotel
Strawberry Wine
Beautiful Sorta
Two
Dear John
Everybody Knows
My Winding Wheel
How Do You Keep Love Alive
Nightbirds
I See Monsters

Encore

Starlite Diner
Blue Sky Blues

~~~~~~~~~~~
Amazing show, just a total class act, really tight and together. I am just so impressed. Above and beyond anything I could have hoped for or expected. Ryan was in top form. The songs were amazing, his vocals were possibly the best I've heard from him, and his banter between songs was hilarious as always. At one point, he was talking strange, and he asked why he was talking like Nick Nolte, prompting him to dedicate "I See Monsters" to "Nick Nolte". He said he had a pink helicopter that shot lasers, but Jamie had a 6 pack of Bud Light and crashed it into a puff of smoke and a gang of ninjas. He played with his hair a lot. He made fun of a crew guy "sneaking" on stage, saying something like, "Yeah, when you walk like that, nobody can see you, I walk like that all the time." He got up and started imitating him, claiming we couldn't see him. When people were yelling out song requests, he simply said stuff like, "Thank you for the suggestions, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but we have a setlist." All sorts of other hilarious stuff too.
Back to the songs...I felt like my breath had been sucked out of me when they launched into "Strawberry Wine", that was just a total treat. I used to get a lot of crud from Ryan fans for not being a big fan of "Elizabeth", but last night has changed my opinion of the song. "Beautiful Sorta" broke my heart, a friend of mine from the Ryan board had that as her one of her nicknames, and she passed away last year. She also has a line from the song as her MySpace headline, and I got teary when I heard it. Even the sentimental value aside, it was a great performance. I guess it was the first time it had been performed like that. "Blue Sky Blues" was also amazing. I had just commented the other day that one of my favorite Ryan song moments was him singing that chorus, so to experience it in person was unbelievable. Except for "Winding Wheel", it was my first time hearing all of those songs live in person. I couldn't have asked for a more amazing evening.
glad you had a great time Kat! curiosity question for all: for a non-Ryan Adams listener such as myself...what album would be the best to start with? or just chronological order?
Chronlogical would be a cool way to go. You'd start with Heartbreaker that way, nothing wrong with that! Picking from them all though, I'd suggest Cold Roses.
