U2 Sales in USA

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

What was all the bullshit people were saying about this year being a difficult year for the music industry, and therefore this is affecting U2's sales numbers? 19 albums sold more than a million copies. Illegal downloading is actually down by a huge percentage. U2 embarked on a huge record-setting tour to support the album. All this working in U2's favor, and they barely manage to sell a million copies. I guess bogus five-star reviews just don't have the same effect on sales as they used to.

Further vindicating my hatred for this album, just a handful of publications mentioned U2 in their year-end best-of lists, even fewer put U2 in their top 10. Life is good.

but...singles downloading is up substantially, thus hurting album sales. Not as many people buy whole albums anymore, they go to itunes or whatever and purchase singles. Maybe illegal downloading is down, but once someone buys the album it is copied then shared all over the place. do some research you'll find album sales are still plummeting as compared to last year and the year before that.

Fifth best selling album this year. Why the hell is so important that it sold "barely" over a million. Give me some stats on best selling artist in the USA in 2009, compare them to U2and you will see they are not that much ahead. And do you think anyone would give a shite about Miley Cirus in 30+ years time?

I don´t know where did you get that info on illegal downloading being reduced this year. Just compare the 2008 numbers and you will see there is a substantial fall in sales. For starters, the difference between the best selling album of the year is 2 million copies!

how does anyone really know that illegal downloading is up or down? lol. ITS ILLEGAL. i know it can be tracked, but only to a certain extent. but its not like theirs a chart, lol.

HELLO? Only having 20 albums sell a million copies is ANYTHING but good! Back in 2000 over 100 albums sold over 1 million copies! Even back in 1983, several dozen albums sold over 1 million copies. This years number of million sellers and half-million sellers is the smallest since the late 1960s!

Illegal downloading is actually down by a huge percentage.

There is no precise accurate way to access that. There is no information on the number of people who burned a friend or co-workers a copy of a CD or sent them the music some other way.

Music sales in 2009 are down 15% from 2008. The overall decline in the industry continues.

U2 embarked on a huge record-setting tour to support the album.

Yep, but people actually have to buy a ticket for that instead of just obtaining the album for free, which is why there is a huge difference between the number of tickets sold and albums sold.

All this working in U2's favor, and they barely manage to sell a million copies. I guess bogus five-star reviews just don't have the same effect on sales as they used to.

How is a growing number of people being able to obtain U2's album for free something in favor of them selling more albums?!?!
