Local Time: 06:33 AM | upto date overall CD sales so on many shows recently the figure of 145m has been quoted _ while U2 performing - so i think this as close as we will get to an official announcement. From my opinion this seems about right _ and means that previous over_quoted sales estimates on TJT and AB can be put to bed ?? Mike |

Local Time: 02:33 AM | This may be true but I hope we some new certifications soon for some of the older albums. I think alot of times bands will get old albums recertified along with the release of a new album to help with promotion. I think The Joshua Tree should be certified at least 12 times platinum in the US. We could also see 18 singles at 1 million 80-90 at 3 million Achtung at 9 million |

Local Time: 06:33 AM | Well going with the recent 145m figure on Letterman & 'nearly 150m albums sold' in Music Week i'd go with, Boy : 3m October : 3m War : 8m WAIA : 2m TUF : 8m UABRS : 8m TJT : 25m R&H : 12m AB : 15m Zooropa : 8m Pop : 6m BO 80-90 : 15m ATYCLB : 12m BO 90-00 : 6.5m HTDAAB : 9m 18 Singles : 4.5m Total = 145m (though i actually had ~144m prior to 18 Singles) + ~25m singles = ~170m records...& maybe this is what they really should mean when they say 170m albums sold. |

This was discussed a lot a few years back. Based on what STING2 used to be saying (where is he by the way) and a few others the general consensus a few years back was. Boy : 3m October : 3m War : 8m UABRS: 8m UF : 8m WAIA : 3m JT : 27m R&H : 13m AB : 17m Zoo : 7m Pop : 6m 1980-1990 : 16m ATYCLB : 12m 1990-2000 : 5m HTDAAB : 9m 18 Singles : 4.5m Total = 149.5 million. I suspect the Joshua Tree and 1980-1990 could be increased by a million each during the last 4 years or so. Around 151.5 million is a good estimate. For simplicity reasons 150 million will do. | |

Local Time: 07:33 AM | Does anyone know how U2 stands in album-sales compared to other big sellers? For example AC/DC, Michael Jackson? Maybe an accurate list exists? For example, in the media you hear all teh time about MJ selling 750M albums? Seems a bit high, not? |

Local Time: 06:33 AM | As of 2008 these are the latest Soundscan US sales numbers which is from 1991-2008 1. Garth Brooks, 68,051,000 2. The Beatles, 56,683,000 3. Mariah Carey, 51,370,000 4. Celine Dion, 50,167,000 5. Metallica, 50,111,000 6. George Strait, 40,201,000 7. Tim McGraw, 37,171,000 8. Alan Jackson, 36,201,000 9. Pink Floyd, 34,986,000 10. Shania Twain, 33,672,000 11. Kenny G, 33,340,000 12. Eminem, 33,078,000 13. U2, 32,473,000 14. Backstreet Boys, 30,655,000 15. Elvis Presley, 30,042,000 The RIAA indicates that total US sales are approximatly 55 million since Boy in the US. In the 80s the US seemed to make up about 50 percent of U2s album buying public but in the 90s and today that has changed to about 33 percent. Based on the RIAA number it can be assumed that U2 sold approximatly 23 million albums in the US within the decade of the 80s and with the assumption of that being 50 percent of the sales within the 80s I am assuming that U2 sold approximatly 46 million albums worldwide within that decade. Based on the fact that U2 has sold about 32 million in the US from 1991-2008 and that being 33 percent of the sales since then tje rest of the world has sold approximatly 64 million since 1990. The new album up until this date has sold approximatly 2 million worldwide so by my calculations we have: 46 million + 96 million + 2 million = 144 million albums. That is my best guess as to approximate sales. I think realistically it could be anyplace between 140-160 million. |
