WIRE
---- U2 Tabbed by jules <jules153@hotmail.com> Here's the tab of the album version, it's in standard tuning. The live versions are played very similar but tuned down half a step. Edge uses a delay with 2 or 3 repeats. Here's the Intro Riff: E--12---12----12----etc.-----15--15--15--15---etc.- B-----10----10----10-----------15--15--15--15------ G-------------------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------------- A-------------------------------------------------- E-------------------------------------------------- After the intro riff come the Main Riff which is played something like this, it's left hand muted strumming followed by an Em chord (listen to the CD for the timing) Em Em E--X---X--X-------------X---X--X---------7-7-7-7-7- B--X---X--X--8~---------X---X--X--8~-----8-8-8-8-8- G--X---X--X--9~---------X---X--X--9~-----9-9-9-9-9- D--X---X--X--9~---------X---X--X--9~--------------- A--X---X--X--7~---------X---X--X--7~--------------- E--X---X--X-------------X---X--X------------------- ~=hold note/chord (not vibrato) After the Main Riff play this Riff2: "cold in his eye's"... "his soul.." E D x3 G5 E-----------------------------------|---3~--3~----- B--------9-----------------7--------|---3~--3~----- G------9-----------------7----------|---0~--0~----- D----9-----------------7------------|---0~--0~----- A--7-----------------5--------------|-------------- E-----------------------------------|-------------- Play the Main Riff then Riff2 again then this: Hit the chords as shown then slide down the fretboard quickly and release letting the delay sound. Em Em E--X---X--X-------7\----X---X--X-------7\---------- B--X---X--X--8~---8\----X---X--X--8~---8\---------- G--X---X--X--9~---9\----X---X--X--9~---9\---------- D--X---X--X--9~---9\----X---X--X--9~---9\---------- A--X---X--X--7~---------X---X--X--7~--------------- E--X---X--X-------------X---X--X------------------- The next verse is the intro and main riff overdubbed. Then Riff 2. These chords are played in the instrumental bit followed by this little riff: Em7 G6 Em7 G6 E---0-----0-----0-----0-------------7~----------7~---- B---3-----3-----3-----3-------------8~----------8~---- G---0-----0-----0-----0----9--9-9-9----9--9-9-9----etc D---2-----0-----2-----0------------------------------- A---2-----2-----2-----2------------------------------- E---0-----3-----0-----3------------------------------- For the next verse play this: (notice the flat fifth...) Em Em E--X---X--X-------------X---X--X---------------------- B--X---X--X--8~----9----X---X--X--8~------------------ G--X---X--X--9~--7---7--X---X--X--9~--7-9-7----------- D--X---X--X--9~---------X---X--X--9~------------------ A--X---X--X--7~---------X---X--X--7~------------------ E--X---X--X-------------X---X--X---------------------- Guitars play the intro riff and some more Em at the 7th fret for the end. That's all the guitar for the song as far as I can see. see ya, jules. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Wire Music by U2 Lyrics by Bono Transcribed by Brandon Leniart <leniarbk@jmu.edu> "Wire" is written in E major and has 2 main guitar parts: the intro/outro, and the chorus. The intro and outro are played by rapidly going back and forth on the 12th and 15th frets on the 1st and 2nd strings. The chorus is simply E and D chords being arpegiated. I wish I had my CD here to transcribe this completely, but this is basically how it goes: Intro (with delay set on fast with few repeats, played with a heavy 4/4 beat) (faster) 1)---12---12---12---12---12---12---12---12------15-15-15-15-15-15- 2)------12---12---12---12---12---12---12---12---15-15-15-15-15-15- 3)---------------------------------------------------------------- 4)---------------------------------------------------------------- 5)---------------------------------------------------------------- 6)---------------------------------------------------------------- When the band comes in, the intro is repeated with several overdubbed fills, 3 of which are below: 1)---x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-- 2)---x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-- 3)---x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-- (strum muted strings) 4)---x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-- 5)---x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-- 6)---x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-- 1)---<12>--<12>--<12>- 2)---<12>--<12>--<12>- 3)---<12>--<12>--<12>- (strum natural harmonics 4)---<12>--<12>--<12>- at 12th fret) 5)---<12>--<12>--<12>- 6)---<12>--<12>--<12>- 1)---12--(12)--(12)--- 2)---12--(12)--(12)--- 3)-------------------- (Hit E & B at 12th frets and 4)-------------------- let echo repeat) 5)-------------------- 6)-------------------- Another overdubbed fill is Edge sliding up and down the neck of the guitar, so try to do as many overdubs that you can. The Verse is done with Edge strumming muted strings then hitting E & B of the 12th fret on the 1st and 2nd strings, letting them echo. The Chorus can be done by arpegiating E and D chords: (E) (D) 1)---------------------------------------- 2)---------9-----------------7------------ 3)-------9----9------------7----7--------- 4)-----9--------9--------7--------7------- 5)---7------------7---5--------------5---- 6)---------------------------------------- The part before the outro (Bono sings "do, do, do") is the same as the above overdubs. The outro (with Bono singing fast) is the same as the intro. Here's a tip: For those with a delay pedal, listen to the last 2 seconds of the song, when Edge slides down the strings, which is echoed. This will give you an idea as to the speed and the repetition of the delay used. --Brandon Leniart |
