Fifth leg setlist design challenge: a set for Sydney
So, some of us enjoy designing sets, and I figured I'd create a bit of a challenge for those who do. These sets will likely be blatantly unrealistic - in other words, the point is not to create what you think the fifth leg setlist will actually be. The point is to have some setlist fun.
The challenge is to devise a setlist for the first night in Sydney without using any more than FOUR of the songs from a certain category. There are three levels of challenges, so choose which one you want to do (and specify which), or just do all three if you'd like! The challenge: you are U2, and because you don't come to Sydney all that often, you want to treat fans to a special set. You figure that your average Sydney fan was a teenager in 1993 and has seen U2 on ZooTV and Popmart, so you'd like to play songs that they haven't heard live before. You are also aware that quite a sizeable amount of fans would have seen U2 in 1989 too, and a good number did back the first time U2 came to Australia in 1984. Challenge level 1: Design a set with no more than four songs from Category A. Challenge level 2: Design a set with no more than four songs from Categories A and B. Challenge level 3: Design a set with no more than four songs ever played before in Sydney (i.e. no more than four from Categories A, B, and C). Make sure you specify which challenge you're doing. Your set may be between 22-25 songs long, must have two encores, and the main set must be at least 15 songs long. You must also keep in mind that this is the Vertigo Tour, so don't ditch HTDAAB, and also remember U2 skipped Australia on the Elevation Tour. Category A: Songs played in 1993 and/or 1998 Angel Of Harlem Bad Bullet The Blue Sky Can't Help Falling In Love Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car Desire Dirty Day Discotheque Even Better Than The Real Thing Gone Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me If You Wear That Velvet Dress I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For I Will Follow Last Night On Earth Lemon Love Is Blindness MLK Mofo Mysterious Ways New Year's Day Numb One Please Pride Running To Stand Still Satellite Of Love Staring At The Sun Stay Sunday Bloody Sunday The Fly Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World Until The End Of The World Where The Streets Have No Name With Or Without You Zoo Station Category B: Songs played in 1989 but not in 1993 or 1998 40 All Along The Watchtower All I Want Is You Gloria God Part II Hawkmoon 269 Help Knockin' On Heaven's Door Love Rescue Me October One Tree Hill Party Girl People Get Ready Stand By Me The Unforgettable Fire Van Diemen's Land When Love Comes To Town Category C: Songs played in 1984 that were not played in 1989, 1993, or 1998 11 O'clock Tick Tock A Day Without Me An Cat Dubh I Fall Down Into The Heart I Threw A Brick Through A Window Out Of Control Seconds Surrender The Cry/The Electric Co. Twilight Two Hearts Beat As One Have fun! I'd like to see what some of you come up with.

Sets from me. I'm doing all three challenges because I'm bored.
Challenge level 1: no songs played in 1993 or 1998. 1. Vertigo 2. Elevation 3. The Electric Co. 4. Gloria 5. The Ocean 6. Beautiful Day 7. Stuck In A Moment 8. The First Time 9. City Of Blinding Lights 10. Original Of The Species 11. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 12. Love And Peace Or Else 13. Exit 14. Miss Sarajevo 15. Where The Streets Have No Name 16. Crumbs From Your Table 17. Zoo Station 18. The Fly 19. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses 20. Out Of Control 21. All Because Of You 22. Fast Cars 23. Yahweh 24. 40 Songs re-used: 3 (Streets, Zoo Station, The Fly) Challenge level 2: No songs played in 1989, 1993, or 1998 1. City Of Blinding Lights 2. Vertigo 3. Elevation 4. The Electric Co. 5. 11 O'clock Tick Tock 6. The Ocean 7. Original Of The Species 8. Beautiful Day 9. Stuck In A Moment 10. Miracle Drug 11. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 12. Love And Peace Or Else 13. Exit 14. Miss Sarajevo 15. Where The Streets Have No Name 16. Crumbs From Your Table 17. Zoo Station 18. The Fly 19. Out Of Control 20. Electrical Storm 21. All Because Of You 22. Fast Cars 23. Yahweh 24. Walk On Songs re-used: 3 (Streets, Zoo Station, The Fly) Challenge level 3: No songs played in 1984, 1989, 1993, or 1998 1. City Of Blinding Lights 2. Beautiful Day 3. Elevation 4. Vertigo 5. Stories For Boys 6. The Ocean 7. A Sort Of Homecoming 8. The First Time 9. Stuck In A Moment 10. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 11. Love And Peace Or Else 12. Wire 13. Exit 14. Miss Sarajevo 15. Where The Streets Have No Name 16. Crumbs From Your Table 17. Zoo Station 18. The Fly 19. Electrical Storm 20. All Because Of You 21. Fast Cars 22. A Man And A Woman 23. Yahweh 24. Walk On Re-used: 3 (Streets, Zoo Station, The Fly) I'm surprised at how easy that was - I could keep my core redesigned set from Category A and didn't have to make too many changes in the next two categories, and I even managed to largely stick with songs played on Vertigo and its themes. In fact, I could've made even less changes but I wanted to keep below the 4 songs maximum and I wanted each set to have 24 songs. So if you think this looks hard, it actually isn't! It's easier than it seems.

Re: Fifth leg setlist design challenge: a set for Sydney
Wow. Very clever idea...
I'll take Challenge C. I need to take into account that they have been playing the following songs regularly: Bullet the Blue Sky Still Haven't Found I Will Follow Mysterious Ways New Year's Day One Pride Sunday Bloody Sunday The Fly Where the Streets Have No Name With or Without You Zoo Station Still Haven't Found, Mysterious Ways, and With or Without You are easy cuts, for they have been sporatic. BTBS IWF NYD One Pride SBS The Fly Streets Zoo Station Bullet the Blue Sky and Sunday Bloody Sunday have been a staple, as have One, Pride, and Streets, which would put me over. I have a hard time believing they'd cut any of them, but it would be Pride. One and Streets have too much of the message. Bullet the Blue Sky could also go, for it doesn't have a message. I Still need to drop one more to pair Zoo Station and The Fly, which doesn't seem likely. The only other encore opener was Discotheque, which was also played in the Category A period. I'd say they find a new encore opener, make the four from that period Streets, SBS, One, and The Fly. City of Blinding Lights Vertigo Elevation Beautiful Day The Ocean Miracle Drug Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of Love and Peace or Else Sunday Bloody Sunday Exit Kite Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses A Sort of Homecoming Where the Streets Have No Name The Fly Fast Cars All Because of You Original of the Species A Man and a Woman Yahweh Walk On |

Love and Peace or Else Vertigo Elevation I Will Follow The Electric Co. Until the End of the World New Year's Day Beautiful Day City Of Blinding Lights Seconds Sunday Bloody Sunday Bullet the Blue Sky Miss Sarajevo Where the Streets Have No Name Crumbs From Your Table Van Diemens Land God Part 2 Bad/Walsing Matilda/Ruby Tuesday/Sympathy for the Devil/The First Time All Because Of you (Alternate Version) Fast Cars A Man and A Woman One Tree Hill 40 That was the hardest Setlist I have ever made, in reality though One would have been played and others from Category A that I couldnt include |

I looked at mine and looked at yours and realized I made a big mistake leaving out Miss Sarejevo (hey, it was midnight). I didn't really feel comfortable with Kite, so here's it new:
City of Blinding Lights Vertigo Elevation Beautiful Day The Ocean Miracle Drug Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of Love and Peace or Else Sunday Bloody Sunday Exit Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses A Sort of Homecoming Miss Sarajevo Where the Streets Have No Name The Fly Fast Cars All Because of You Original of the Species A Man and a Woman Yahweh Walk On I can definitely see them ending the main set with Streets, imagine a moment like in ZooTV Sydney with the closing and Bono just staring out to the crowd. It could definitely work. And to edit another mistake from the last, I didn't end up using One, so my only reused were Streets, SBS, and The Fly.

All Because of You 22. Fast Cars 23. Original of the Species 24. 40 Songs re-used (Streets, Zoo Station, One, The Fly) Last edited by Joey788; 07-14-2006 at 09:54 AM.. |

Axver,
40 was played in 1998during Popmart. Also Two Hearts Beat as One and 11 O Clock Tick Tock were played in 1989 during LoveTown. (Thanks to your site for the knowledge) |

Hehe, everyone's lucky I didn't choose Melbourne. Over U2's visits to Australia, they've played even more songs in Melbourne than Sydney (such as Wire, ASOH, and Exit). That might've made things even harder.
