There's some pretty good stuff lined up for early 2010. LCD Soundsystem? The National? Los Campesinos? Count me in.

I liked Neon Bible, but I too would like something with the atmosphere of Funeral

Well, I don't usually assume people to be experts on RHCP setlists.

I'm assuming they have. At this point I'm not sure if Boner knows what year it is.

If every band could release albums as quality as Neon Bible, the music world would be better off for it, but I do believe they're capable of more. I think they painted themselves into a corner a little bit, and sort of caricatured themselves on a few tracks. I would be perfectly fine with another ten Neon Bibles, but they need to dream it all up again and all that jazz if they want to remain on the cutting edge.

Yeah, that was me. I enjoy a lot of Frusciante's solo stuff, that song in particular is probably my favorite of his.

How have they caricatured themselves? I remember you saying that about Intervention, which is one of my favorite tracks of theirs.

Caricaturing a sound, to me, is taking the most ear-catching, pronounced side of a band and stretching it out over the course of an entire album, removing what balanced it in the first place. In Neon Bible's case, the darker side of their sound is emphasized to the point where a lot of the excitement and joy I loved so much in Funeral is lost. Sure, I enjoyed tracks like In The Backseat and Power Out, the really dark stuff, but there was an emotional edge throughout that album that I don't feel from a lot of Neon Bible.

Best example I can think of is Windowsill. Holy shit, they really want that song to be not only the emotional climax of the album, but our culture as a whole, and it just comes across as really repetitive and dour. Black Mirror...is that song about anything in particular? It has the emotional depth of a haunted house attraction.

For me, Keep The Car Running and Antichrist Television Blues are where it's at. They really click right in to what made me love the band in the first place. Ocean Of Noise too...God, that final minute is one of my favorite musical moments of the decade. Intervention has admittedly grown on me. And the album just sounds awesome. It's very atmospheric and flows relatively well, I just wish the lyrics had more depth than they do throughout.

Sorry to ramble. Really dig the album, it's just that Funeral is arguably my favorite album of the decade and, measured against that, most albums fall short.

Sounds like a pretty ambitious project for them.

This does sound harsh, but I actually agree with this. Especially compared to their counterparts on Funeral, they are certainly lacking.

Yesto all of this, though I also feel My Body is a Cage is a real standout, and is about 10x more powerful than Windowsill. There's nothing I dislike on the album, but it just lacks that certain spark with made Funeral so special. And I think atmosphere, as Jive Turkey said, has a lot to do with it.
