I don't think deep wants Obama's poll ratings to increase.

They already have, by the way, but that doesn't really play well into the chicken little scenario many have embraced so happily.

Not 'softening' the story might well increase the number of people tuning in to the convention, but would certainly also hamper the party's ability to keep the focus on laying out its agenda.

I think the sketchiness of the investigation's findings thus far (at least based on what I've read) may also be a factor. All three of the men arrested had substantial criminal records, all three were 'under the influence' at the time of arrest, their cited links to 'outlaw biker' and 'white supremacist' groups remain speculative, and there may well be good reason to doubt the credibility of some of their statements. Time will tell.

How many of the posters in this forum would change their vote if someone was believed to be targeting McCain.

All this election is coming down to is a very small number of voters, 2, 3 maybe 4 %.

Many of these undecideds could just think why elect Obama when there are so many crazies out there.
The country could not survive the first Black President being assassinated.
It is too risky, he has two young daughters, why risk it?

Nice poem, but it doesn't work that way. There are many voters who are hesitant to support Obama because of assassination fears. There have been forums on the topic.

But the story has been played down for security reasons, not political ones.
