The song right at the beginning of the video, before Kingdom, is Sometime Around Midnight by The Airborne Toxic Event.

OK, the show. Opening night, the big launch... and of course it went remarkably well. In some ways I'd never doubted it, having been so very confident about the strength of this idea since it popped into my head in New Zealand in 2006, but of course I'd never admit that until the first gig was well and truly in the bag. It was a warm, clear night and the stadium was packed to the rafters with a very rowdy audience who were chanting and doing Mexican waves before U2 were anywhere near the stage. At 10-ish the house lights went down and 'Kingdom of Your Love' came over the monster PA. Larry made his solo, spotlighted walk up the long rear ramp to the drum kit, with constellations of flash bulbs going off all over the stadium, then sat down. The audience was in full voice, but I could sense in there if not confusion, a curiosity as to what exactly was about to happen. Larry hammered out the opening to 'Breathe' as the others appeared and I enjoyed feeling the audience realise that this wasn't going to be as obvious an opening as we could have chosen. It felt good, new, fresh.

Thanks! So I called it then a while back!

not that anybody reads this thread, but there was a mention of a poem that was played over the PA before Ultraviolet:

Quote:
W.H. Auden, Stop all the clocks

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
-dan

Indeed. That was a great find in the NLOTH Deluxe Pics. I had to go back and look at my own version to finally catch that...we can only hope that they release it with SOA now

Yeah, I remember really liking the songs they were playing before the Vertigo shows I saw, and looks like I can look forward to some more good stuff. I'll be dancing like a crazy person when that Yeah Yeah Yeahs song starts. Love it!

I hadn't heard of Airborne Toxic Event until a few months ago (and before U2 started using one of their songs as pre-show music, I swear!), and I really like the album. I need to pick that up.

Ha, I'm just finishing going through all the songs in order on You Tube, and I agree, great list this tour! That was one of my favourite parts of Vertigo, and one of my fondest memories of the tour, going through the songs, getting to know the order, and the anticipation building till Wake Up came on.

I also agree about Airborne Toxic Event, they've probably caught my attention more than any other recent new band. I like them a lot.

Glad you guys are enjoying the tunes. Was great listening to it waiting around. Put's you in a good mood before the boys rock the night out!

Found another one I didn't know before the tour:

Bat for Lashes - Daniel

Pretty cool dance track, really like the chorus. Don't recall any poems being played btw.

I heard a song before U2 came up on the stage (not David Bowie or Kingdom)...I also have a film with the song from Croke Park...and it's not one of these songs! I would like to have this song, but I don't know the name of it! Someone who knows another song than these that was played before U2 entered the stage?
